CELEBRATING NIGERIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC GREATS – Tobi Kemewerigha

ARTISTE OF THE WEEK – Tobi Kemewerigha

This article is a very old one, but very interesting. It is so because this very talented Nigerian makes Instruments, so I thought to share it with you.
He is that type of an artiste people will easily neglect. As much as he is a musician, he does a whole lot of “the dirty job”.

I first met this man in 2004, during my days at the Music Department of UNN, he was a Tenor  Saxophone major, whilst he studied Music Technology under the Mus Tech. Lecturer; Emmanuel Nwachukwu and with a lot of practical works per day. He spent most of his time in the Mus. Tech workshop and others for his Saxophone rehearsals, reading and borrowed courses.

The finished work

He worked so hard to perfect his Saxophone playing which paid off over the years. He developed a very “Stevie wonder” like tone on his sax. It was a delight to listen to that rare tone, coated with a little harshness on the background, I felt like it was Stevie Wonder singing, each time he played.

A musician who is sound with Harmony, Theory and Understands Woodwind and brass Music, he made just any instrument he wanted to make.
The pictures on this article shows him making
1. Acoustic guitar
2. Bass guitar
3. Amplified Xylophone
4. Piano

Let me state this clearly. That piano didn’t have a bad sound at all, he did a lot of research before he chose the type of wood he used, he built the body, but used parts from an old piano. The Xylophone is also not left out, he did a fantastic job with it.

He played the Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones very well. I remember how he would play Bach’s pieces on his Saxophone back then. But I didn’t know how he squeezed out time to practice music technology.

Please put your hands together for this Teacher, Saxophonist, Instrument Maker and Music Technologist. Tobi Kemewerigha
